Vacation 3: Las Vegas & Hoover Dam

That night we stayed in Las Vegas. We were both not particularly interested in Vegas (I just wanted to take some photos for work), and thus we arrived in the late afternoon and left early next day. We stayed at the only campground on the strip, which belonged to Circus Circus. We walked down the strip for a while, but it was uncomfortably hot, totally crowded and just insane. I didn't like Vegas when I was there in 1986, and I didn't like it this time - just not my cup of tea. Neil liked it even less, and thus we were glad to head out of town next morning.

Casinos everywhere...

On the way to Flagstaff and on to Grand Canyon, we came past Hoover Dam. But before we got there, there was suddenly a long traffic jam. When we got to the end of this traffic jam, we saw what caused the delay: There are security checks on the way to the dam. Each car is being checked. For motorhomes they had a separate lane, and an officer looked at most outside storage compartments, and then had a brief look inside the van. Quite frankly, if we wanted to bring in explosives we could have easily done so 0- the check was very superficial. But then again, I guess the officers quickly assess who are just tourists and who might be potential problem makers...

A new bridge to by-pass Hoover Dam is being built
