The
Aztec Ruins National Monument is in the town of Aztec, New Mexico. We arrived there in the afternoon, and had a look around the place. You get a "borrowed" brochure and do a self-guided tour. When I read about the Aztec Ruins, my first thought was that the Aztecs were in South America, and not in North America. That is indeed the case, and the ruins were falsely named "Aztec" by the German explorer Alexander von Humboldt, because he thought that the Aztecs made it indeed that far north... We walked around the site, and while it was quite interesting, it was not as exciting as Mesa Verde...
my guide...;-)
Neil looking into another kiva (see Mesa Verde blog)
A model of the complete site. This village housed about 500 rooms.
We kept on driving southbound on yet another very long, seemingly never-ending long straight road. Our target was a public campground in the Blue Water Lake Recreation Area. We arrived after dark, and got one of the last two sites left...
Quick stop at sunset...
